Hargeisa District, classified as a Grade A district, serves as the capital and largest city of Somaliland with an estimated population of approximately 1.8 million people. Covering an area of 120 sq. km, the city consists of nine sub-districts and surrounding villages, totaling 10 administrative clusters. Notable sub-districts include Ga’an-Libah, Mohamoud Haybe, Kodbur, Ahmed Dhagah, 31 May, Mohamed Haybe, Mohamed Mooge, 26 Juun, and Gacma Dhere. Additionally, outlying villages under Hargeisa’s jurisdiction include Darasalam, Farawayne, Da’ar Buduq, Cadadley, Sabawanag, Bali Matan, and Da’arta.
Situated in the Galgodon (Ogo) highlands, Hargeisa is at an elevation of 1,334 meters (4,377 feet) with geographic coordinates of 9°34′N 44°4′E. The city experiences a population growth rate of 6.6% annually and serves as the commercial hub of Somaliland, hosting a floating population of at least 200,000 people.
The city’s climate features temperatures ranging from 13°C to 32°C, with humidity levels between 40% and 70%. Seasonal wind speeds reach up to 40 km/hour, and average annual rainfall varies from 200 to 400 millimeters, with peaks in April, May, and September.
